When Light Governs

In the opening chapter of Genesis, darkness covered the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. Then God spoke, and light appeared. Darkness could neither veto His command nor prevent its fulfilment. Before anything else took shape, creation witnessed the authority of God’s word. When He commanded light to shine, darkness had to yield.

Later, God appointed the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night (Genesis 1:16–18). Their authority was assigned, their boundaries established, and their purpose determined by their Creator. Even the night was given a light. Although natural darkness belongs to God’s good creation, this arrangement provides a picture worth considering: God establishes order, and everything He appoints remains subject to Him.

Scripture develops the spiritual significance of light through Jesus Christ. He is the light of the world, and those who follow Him receive the light of life (John 8:12). His coming confronts the dominion of sin, deception, and death. Darkness represents a kingdom that enslaves, but Christ possesses the authority to release its captives. Colossians 1:13 declares that God has rescued us from darkness’s dominion and brought us into the kingdom of His beloved Son.

Consider what that means. Through Christ, your loyalty, identity, and spiritual position have changed. The power that once held you captive has encountered a greater authority. At the cross, Christ disarmed the spiritual powers and triumphed over them (Colossians 2:15). His resurrection declares His victory over death. We face a defeated enemy whose activity is real, but whose authority is neither supreme nor equal to our Lord’s.

Ephesians 2:6 tells us that God raised us with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms. Our confidence rests in our union with the risen King. We belong to the One exalted above every spiritual power (Ephesians 1:20–23). This position calls us to stand confidently under His authority, fully dependent on His grace. We exercise authority faithfully as we obey the One who possesses it.

James 4:7 gives us the order: submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee. Submission and resistance belong together. We cannot knowingly embrace darkness and expect to confront it with spiritual integrity. Before we challenge the enemy’s influence around us, we must surrender the places within us where we have welcomed resentment, pride, deception, or disobedience.

When spiritual darkness shapes a life, lies become persuasive, sin becomes acceptable, and confusion distorts judgment. Yet Christ’s light exposes what darkness conceals. Ephesians 5:8–11 calls believers to live as children of light, producing goodness, righteousness, and truth while exposing evil. We carry that witness into our homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. Through prayer, truth, holiness, and love, we actively resist the spread of darkness.

Jesus appointed His followers to shine where others could see their good works and glorify the Father (Matthew 5:14–16). Our authority must therefore bear His character. We refuse intimidation, proclaim the gospel, pray for the oppressed, and help restore those wounded by sin. We govern the responsibilities entrusted to us with courage and humility. Christ’s kingdom becomes visible through people whose lives are governed by their King.

Friends, stop allowing the darkness around you to define the strength of the Christ within you. Rise in the confidence of your position in Him. Bring your thoughts under His truth, your words under His lordship, and your decisions under His wisdom. Stand against evil without surrendering love. Let light govern your home and every responsibility God has entrusted to you. The enemy may oppose your obedience, but he cannot overturn Christ’s supremacy. We can stand, we can resist, and we can shine, because our risen Lord reigns.
